The horses Blend of fine breeds
Costa Rican horses are called ?Criollos?, a word that means ?homemade?, ?local or indigenous and are a blend of early Spanish horses and other fine breeds. Horses came to Costa Rica with the Conquistadors. Before Christopher Columbus discovered the rich coast, there were no horses in Costa Rica. Mainly used for the cattlework on farms, you will also find them at the famous horseparades the ? Topes?, celebrated at all festivals. The strong, resistant, diligent and lively Criollos are a combination of all the breeds brought here particulary by the Spaniards and Portugesians. You also find cross-bred Andalusians, Arabians, and Quarter Horses - simply said: ?home made? .
