The people

The people

Their motto means ?pure life?
Half of the three million habitants of Costa Rica live in or around the capital city of San José. Eighty percent of the people are of Spanish descent, but different immigrations at times in the past have brought African and Chinese influences. The number of indigenous indians is estimated at 5,000 to 20,000.

The people of Costa Rica are proud and friendly, patriotic but open, diligent but always ready to celebrate something. The Ticos, as the Costa Rican call themselves, are sociable and proud of their European heritage. They speak Spanish, but with an old-world flavor.

One theme is the same in the whole country: If you ask a Tico ?How are you?? you will often get the answer ?Pura Vida!? - the pure life.
